Rocky Mountain high brings on new meaning for the Royal Gorge Region Spring of 2012 as the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Canon City, Colo., home to one of the world's highest suspension bridges, and hosting over 25 million visitors since 1929, installs its newest thrill seeker attraction, the Soaring Eagle Zip Line racing 1,400 feet over granite walls a thousand feet high.
January 27, 2012, Colorado Springs, CO - This spring, in a new twist on the traditional piggy bank, the Colorado Springs community can be a part of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s biggest project ever. Getting a special elephant bank through the zoo’s Bank on It program means you’ll be leaving your mark on the spectacular new Encounter Africa exhibit, featuring new homes for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s elephant herd, African lion pride, and meerkats. We’re also bringing the critically endangered black rhinoceros back to Colorado Springs. Photos of each bank will be featured in a permanent art installation in the exhibit. Banks will be available for a $50 donation through April 1, 2012.
As always, Manitou's annual Carnivale Parade will take place on the Saturday preceding Fat Tuesday. This year, that means the Parade will march up Manitou Avenue starting at 1 p.m. February 18, 2012. This year's Carnivale theme is The Age of Aquarius. The Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook Off will again precede the Parade and will be in the pavilion in Soda Springs Park. Public tastings begin at 11 a.m. and they go fast.

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry (WMMI) has sad news to report. Despite the efforts of the WMMI staff, its members and veterinarian, Oro, one of the Museum’s cherished donkeys (aka burro), succumbed to a chronic illness and died on December 28, 2011.

A wrecking ball will roll into position to do most of the work at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo this Wednesday morning, November 9, but elephant keepers will get the first swings at the old elephant barn using sledgehammers! The building, which opened in the early 1950s, is coming down to make way for the next phases of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s $13.5 million Encounter Africa project - new elephant, rhino, lion and meerkat exhibits. The project started in late 2010 and will be completed in 2013.

Nearly 8,000 people streamed through the gates of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last weekend for the biggest Halloween party in the region and even more are expected this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 28 – 30. Boo at the Zoo is for families wanting a safe, not-too-scary adventure and runs 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each night, with last admission sold at 7:30 p.m. The largest crowd is expected Saturday night, and slightly fewer people Friday and Sunday. Arrival before ticket pre-sales begin at 5:00 p.m. is encouraged. Parking at the zoo is limited, and once all spots are filled, a wait can be expected.
October 10, 2011 - It’ll be all treats and no tricks (well, maybe just a few!) for little ghosts and goblins at this year’s Boo at the Zoo, the region’s largest Halloween party. Boo at the Zoo is for families wanting a safe, not-too-scary adventure the weekends of October 21 – 23 and 28 – 30, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each night, with last admission sold at 7:30 p.m. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will close to the public at 4:00 p.m. those nights to prepare.

During Old Colorado City’s August 5 ArtWalk, art lovers will find a new guest artist at Hunter-Wolff Gallery. Sally Hegarty’s collection of about a dozen paintings reflects not only her broad experience with different media, but how she combines mixed media with collage for impact. Her canvasses showcase her years of design and printing experience with layers of colorful paper, ink and acrylic paints.
The first-ever USA Pro Cycling Challenge Prologue Time Trial is just around the corner. On Monday, August 22, 2011, 128 pro cyclists will be riding through the streets of Colorado Springs for the most important stage of the race, one that determines the order for the first road stage the next day. During the Time Trial, riders will be released at one-minute intervals starting at 1:15 p.m., taking them (and spectators) through the Garden of the Gods, Old Town Colorado Springs and into downtown for the finish between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Celebrating Western Heritage
in Pikes Peak Country!

Holiday Parade will be held
Saturday, December 13, 2008. The parade will begin at 12 p.m., noon, from the
corner of Manitou Ave & El Paso Blvd. and follows a route through historic
downtown Manitou Springs.
